NHRC notice to Government of Punjab over death of newborns in a Ludhiana hospital
The National Human Rights Commission
has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that five newborns died at
Mother & Child Hospital in Field Ganj, Ludhiana on the 23rd
November, 2014 due to lack of facilities.
The deaths occurred two days after the inauguration of the hospital by
the Health Minister of Punjab on the 21st November, 2014. The hospital is a special wing for expecting
mothers in the premises of Lord Mahaveer Civil Hospital.
The Commission has observed that the
contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of
human rights of the victim. Accordingly,
it has issued a notice to the Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare
Department, Government of Punjab calling for a report within two weeks. |
