The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh calling for reports, returnable in two weeks, into the reported thrashing of a Dalit youth and ill-treatment meted out to him in Khera Village of the district.  The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the Dalit victim.

          The Commission issued the notice after taking suo motu cognizance of media reports that on the 18^th September, 2014, a Dalit youth, Sujan Singh, was brutally thrashed and then forced to eat human excreta by some influential people of the area with whom he had a land dispute.  His head was shaved off and his private parts were also set on fire.  He was undergoing treatment in a hospital for his injuries.
