NHRC notice to Delhi Police Commissioner on an issue of illegal judicial custody

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that due to carelessness of Delhi Police an accused remained in the illegal judicial custody for about two months. Kotwali Police Station of Central Delhi District, Delhi arrested one Irfan in a case of kidnapping, produced him before the court on the 15th June, 2014, but without getting extension for his judicial custody, sent him to jail where he remained for about two months. The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the right to life. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi calling for a report within four weeks. |
